The hardware used in the vehicle is crucial for using our digital fleet management system. There are two solutions available depending on the vehicle model: factory installation or retrofitting with the DataPlug.
You can order any new Crafter with the VW telematics box. The built-in SIM card connects your vehicle to the Internet and reliably transmits read-outs directly to the WebPortal. With the VW telematics box, you can make full use of the services of We Connect Fleet.2
To use the VW telematics box, you need to register on the Car-Net portal and have an active Car-Net Security & Service licence.3 This is free of charge for one year.
We Connect Fleet can be used in almost any 2008 or newer Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle using the DataPlug4 and the We Connect Fleet app on your smartphone.
It’s easy to retrofit the DataPlug4 – simply contact your service partner. Or just purchase the vehicle adapter from your Volkswagen commercial vehicle dealer and install it yourself.

To use We Connect Fleet, 3 things are necessary: First of all, the fleet manager needs a commercial Volkswagen user account in order to log in to the We Connect Fleet WebPortal. In order to create a user account, he needs to register in the We Connect Fleet WebPortal on https://connectfleet.io by clicking the login button. In doing so, he will automatically be created as a business client. Next, you need a connection unit in your vehicle able to send vehicle data to We Connect Fleet. Currently, We Connect Fleet provides the DataPlug and the VW TelematikBox. The DataPlug is a plug for the OBD2 socket of your vehicle and is retrofittable for most Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles models since construction year 2008, depending on the equipment. The VW TelematikBox is an onboard connectivity unit with an integrated SIM card and is available for the new Crafter. Lastly, the drivers need a web-enabled Smartphone as well as the We Connect Fleet Smartphone App, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.
The fleet manager has access to the We Connect Fleet WebPortal where he can keep an overview of his vehicles and drivers. He can see the location of his vehicles which helps him processing his customer orders optimally. In the online logbook he has all information about driven routes available at any time. At the end of a year, he can export all logbook information in order to provide a record of all trips without any effort. The online fuel log helps him to keep an overview of his fleet's fuel costs. Thanks to the clear structure and display he has all necessary information at hand and can increase the efficiency of his work.
The driver can log in to the We Connect Fleet Smartphone App with the login data that he has received from his fleet manager. There he can connect to a fleet vehicle in order to use the services of We Connect Fleet. Vehicle data, which are sent to the Smartphone App, significantly simplify keeping a logbook. The online fuel log enables the driver to to send his fuel stops directly to the fleet manager.
The creation of a Volkswagen user account is free. Connecting a vehicle to the system causes costs: The DataPlug needs to be purchased once and costs 39,50€ (gross). Since the DataPlug connects to the driver's Smartphone and requires internet connection, further costs, depending on the rates of the respective mobile providers, may be incurred. The VW TelematikBox has an integrated SIM card. Therefore, no additional internet connection is necessary for the vehicle data transmission. For the VW TelematikBox, however, the one-time purchase cost amounts to 245€ (net) / 292€ (gross). Free use of a VW TelematikBox is possible within the first year of purchase. Subsequently, licensing costs of 145€ (gross) per vehicle per year incur.

The service light in one of your vehicles has been blinking for weeks, but no one has notified the fleet manager. The daily workload keeps everyone busy, and it’s easy to forget about fleet maintenance. We Connect Fleet informs the manager on the WebPortal when maintenance is due. That way they can contact the service partner in time and avoid unnecessary downtime and repair costs.
