The new Amarok. Life is full of challenges.

Tested by Dakar – the new pickup from Volkswagen.

Its name comes from the Inuit language and means “wolf”. Like its namesake, the Amarok feels at home in the wilderness and meets the most exacting off-road requirements.
The new pickup impressively demonstrated that it can calmly cope with even the most stringent conditions during its first endurance test in January at the most arduous rally in the world. The Amarok was the official escort vehicle for the 2010 Dakar Rally through Argentina and Chile, and neither temperatures of 50°C nor mountain passes over 4,500 metres high were able to daunt it. The pickup passed this almost 9,000 kilometre endurance test with flying colours.

Are you ready?

Where others reach their limits, the Amarok makes its way without compromise. It combines off-road capabilities with flexibility and efficiency like no other pickup before thanks to:
  • optional 4MOTION all-wheel drive for traction on almost every type of terrain
  • the widest load platform in its class, enabling even Euro pallets to be loaded crosswise
  • the powerful 2.0 l TDI® Biturbo engine* which sets new standards in terms of economy
  • and, last but not least, thanks to the robust ladder frame chassis which offers a high level of stability during even the toughest assignments.
The Amarok breaks new ground on conventional roads as well: with its high-quality interior and driving characteristics that leave nothing to be desired, it sets a completely new benchmark in terms of comfort and dynamics.

Selectable or permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

Tough assignments call for efficient power management. With selectable 4MOTION all-wheel drive the Amarok is able to distribute power equally between the front and rear axle for reliable traction on almost all surfaces at the push of a button. The Amarok is available with selectable, and with permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive – plus the electronic stabilisation programme (ESP)as standard.

Payload of up to one tonne.

Heavy-duty leaf springs can be chosen to equip the Amarok for a maximum load of up to 1,137 kg**. Comfort leaf springs can be fitted if you have to transport lighter loads of up to 938 kg. The 2.52 m² load area with a through-loading width of 1,222 mm is the widest in its class – Euro pallets can be loaded crosswise with ease.

2.0 litre TDI® Biturbo engine*.

The Amarok is equipped with one of the most efficient engines of our time. The two exhaust turbochargers result in impressive response at lower engine speeds and increased output at higher revs. With 120 kW (163 bhp) at a torque of 400 Nm you can quickly leave the daily grind, and high operating costs, behind you – as the Amarok with rear-wheel drive has average fuel consumption of only 7.6 litres per 100 km. No wonder the Volkswagen Race Touareg relies on the same Biturbo engine technology for the most gruelling rally in the world – the Dakar Rally.

High-grade, safe interior.

Comfort on a par with that of a passenger car: the interior of the Amarok offers comfortable seats, plenty of head and legroom, a low interior noise level and a generous amount of stowage space. The high-grade cockpit and stowage facilities make sure that you are extremely comfortable and safe in the Amarok. The standard specification includes not only airbags for the driver and front passenger but also ABS, ESP with trailer stabilisation, hill holder and hill descent assist, and more besides.
